If you have had any form of success it's easy to think that you've figured "it" out or "mastered" it. Take Nintendo for example. I vividly remember how teachable I was when it came to tips and tricks concerning Mike Tyson's punch out. I was on a mission to reign victorious over Piston Honda, Glass Joe and of course Soda Popinski. Due to this, I had an insatiable desire to learn all that I could, that is until I TKO'd Mike Tyson. Conquering quenched my level of teachability. That's video ... continue reading...
The Million Dollar Man
I am not ashamed to say that growing up I used to watch WWF (now WWE, which is dumb but I won’t get into that) wrestling. I didn’t even just watch, I was a fan! Ordering the Pay-Per View events and eating Cheetos and drinking Mountain Dew with my friends. There was NOTHING better. A prominent player in the WWF game that I remember loving to hate was Ted DiBiase AKA “The Million Dollar Man”. This dude had all the money in the world and he made sure everyone knew it. He would walk to the ring ... continue reading...
Boost Your Belief
In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus warned his future church planters about something micro that causes macro damage...yeast. According to Wikipedia, yeast is a growth form of eukaryotic microorganisms and while it may cause bread to rise, it causes faith and church plants to plummet. “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.” Here in Mark 8, Jesus pairs something together that doesn't seem to have anything in common; the Pharisees and Herod. ... continue reading...
K.I.S.S.
I grew up the youngest of three boys and from the time I could walk I was changing jerseys to fit whatever sport was in season. Baseball was always my first love but I also played American football, basketball, and I dabbled in soccer for a few years. I played on a plethora of teams and was coached by many various people over the course of my life. Each of those coaches seemed to have their own little slogan or catch phrase to help us stay focused on what was important. One specific coach ... continue reading...
Our Desire To Be Connected
I was talking with a pastor and network leader from Kampala, Uganda. His church has planted 8 other churches/campuses and they’ve also started 70 missional communities. As we were getting to know one another he discovered that I had previously planted two churches. Despite the wonderful multiplication that has already occurred under his leadership he said they’re constantly learning and wondering how to expand their church planting efforts. At this point Pastor Moses asked me, “What are some ... continue reading...
Generosity DNA
I have heard it said that you’ve not preached on grace until it is abused. I agree with that, and I tremble at that fact. I also have learned that a generosity DNA does not begin on your first capital drive, it begins when you have received your first donation. Sounds crazy, Yes but it works. The generosity of whatever nature kicks off from this understanding, “freely you have received, freely give” the key word is free. Withholding nothing, give away something – and it sounds simple but through ... continue reading...
The Cart Before The Horse?
Very quickly in my first few months as Regional Director of Sub-Saharan Africa I realized that something wasn’t quite adding up. The conversations that I was having with pastors about church planting were imperceptibly different than those I was used to having in the USA. I would sit down to talk to a local pastor and I’d ask about their church planting structures and what their process was for launching a new church. They were the usual questions: How do you find and select your ... continue reading...
